Osteopathy in general
Osteopathy is a hands-on manual therapy that focuses on the musculoskeletal system and its relationship to overall health.
Osteopathy was founded in 1874 by Dr A. T. Still – an American physician and surgeon - after identifying that many of the medical interventions being used at the time were not garnering the best results for patients. He came to understand that if all the parts were in working order then the whole could function properly.
There are four key principles that provide the basis of osteopathic rationale:
The body is a unit
The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance
Structure and function are reciprocally inter-related
Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the above
In Australia, osteopaths must complete a minimum of five-years university education where they are trained to assess and diagnose conditions prior to providing treatment. They are registered health practitioners with AHPRA which means that they are required to commit to ongoing learning and education.
